Supporting local voluntary organisations

I am a patron of Holbeck Elderly Aid, Faith Together in Leeds, Caring Together in Woodhouse and Little London.

Helping to regenerate inner-city Leeds

Parts of inner-city Leeds experiences high levels of poverty, crime, vandalism and unemployment. I am working to support the regeneration of these areas - like Halton Moor, Beeston, Holbeck and East End Park - in partnership with Leeds City Council and local community organisations. Crime is now lower, thanks to more police and PCSOs. I strongly believe that real change has to come from the bottom up, with local community groups crucial to success.

Raising levels of achievement of children in Leeds

I always try and support headteachers and staff in inner-city Leeds in their efforts to raise levels of achievement by pupils. A number of schools now have brand new buildings or have been refurbished, and primary schools in the area have achieved significant improvements in Maths and English results for 11 year olds. Congratulations to all those who are working really hard!

The fight to save Mount St Mary’s Primary School

I am working with local parents to oppose the plan to close this outstanding Beacon school. Mount St Mary’s does an excellent job in this part in East Leeds and it deserves to stay open.
